Poverty in Ghana has led to poor hygiene practices, and unhealthy living conditions which in turn lead to diseases. In Ghana, the healthcare system is grossly inadequate; treatable diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, diarrhea and HIV/AIDS cause permanent disability and mortality. In order to improve the situation, Miracle Works has partnered with hospitals and clinics that are in desperate need of volunteers.
Volunteers with medical training and medical students will support the local health centers in Ghana. These clinics and hospitals are severely understaffed and struggle to provide general care. Volunteers hands on work will depend on their qualifications. We do ask that they provide their own gloves, masks and scrubs.
In addition to working in the clinics, volunteers will be part of the community health team. Each week, the public health team conducts health talks to the students at district schools and villages. Work alongside local public health nurses to measure and record vital statistics, BMI, and blood pressure for individuals in need.
Objectives:
Conduct comprehensive health assessments in underserved rural communities.
Work collaboratively with SMWEF public health nurses to check vital statistics, malaria, BMI, blood pressure, and provide basic medical treatments.
Empower community members with health education, preventive measures, and resources for improved well-being.

Scrubs Requirement:

We are always in the lookout for people who have passion for development and willing to contribute their time, energy, skills and experience to support our community development projects in rural Ghana. Most volunteers and interns see this as an adventure or a work camp. Volunteers are needed for the on-going construction, painting and renovation projects in various communities of Ghana.
Enthusiasm, a caring spirit, a good sense of humor, compassionate and a helping hand are required. There is lots of fun working together with the local people on construction and renovation projects such as schools, orphanages, volunteer hostels, painting schools or drawing arts on school walls, community centers, library projects, recreational centers etc.
Volunteering in construction projects is challenging, volunteers will engage in construction activities such as digging, plastering, block shaping, brick molding, concrete mixing, steel bending, wiring, chiseling, mixing sand and cement, bricks laying, carrying bricks, sand, fetching water, painting school buildings. They will be led and work together with local skilled craft men/artisan who will be providing free labor for the improvement of their communities.
Volunteers work with locals to make sure these projects get completed and match the needs of the people they are benefiting. You may find that the way you are used to working on building projects back home can be different from this experience; the materials used are often a bit more simple and there can be limited tools for construction. Additionally, work schedules are not always the same as you might imagine them to be in your country, so get ready to test your cross-cultural knowledge.
The core of each project is the building work that we undertake in the villages and towns. This is the most tangible contribution that we make to the host community, and forms a focus for you and the group. Those less keen on heavy building or renovation work usually take up the lighter, but equally important, work such as painting or plastering.
We research each project to ensure it meets our strict criteria including an assessment of the need, benefits and long term sustainability of the project itself, together with levels of community involvement, risk assessments, health and safety requirements, logistical practicality and living arrangements.
The key to any building project is the partner between you, the team and the local community, as well as bringing essential funding to the project, the presence of a team of volunteers in the town or village community can be a great motivator to local people. On every project, it takes time for every villagers to get used to the idea that volunteers, especially girls, actually want to help with manual labor, and initially you will find people trying to do all the work for you.
Working with skilled workmen, they will teach you basic skills such as how to mix mortar or lay bricks and the partnership really begins to develop, allowing everyone to get stuck in. These projects are for volunteers who are on summer vacation, taking a career break, a gap year you’re your education, seniors, retirees, solo travelers, families, couple, groups etc and they run throughout the year.
PLEASE NOTE:
Volunteers participating in this project must note that due to bad weather (usually very hot weather or a rainy day), project funding delays and constraints in construction material supply, volunteers may work at the construction site twice or three times in five working days of the week. However, volunteers are encouraged to support other projects such as the teaching at the basic school and the orphanage program during their absence from the construction site.
Volunteers should bring gloves, flash light, light weight scarf for sun protection or hat, insect repellent, working boots, water bottle etc.
Materials Funding
As our placements are cost price, for the construction and renovation team we will need you to fundraise/donate to cover the materials and local laborers you will be using and working with. Most community centers in Africa offer a safe haven from the streets, and opportunity for education, even a simple meal and a place to sleep. St. Miracle Works Educational Foundation works closely with its development partners across the country to provide needed support and care for the needy children. Many of these children and youth have lost their way because they lack compassion and love from their own family. Volunteers can help with training lessons to make the youth self-reliant, or self-employed through education, support and counseling. Teaching Math, English and the importance of education is a main focus.
The project addresses social and physical issues affecting youth, such as gender, reproductive health, and drug abuse through counseling and education. Volunteers help initiate talks about the existence of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. Prior experience not required, just a caring heart for these disadvantaged children. With more focus in developing countries on preventing violence and abuse at home, and by reaching out to children already on the streets and providing them with the rehabilitation, education and security they desperately need.
We exist to promote children empowerment in developing countries, particularly in Africa serving as role models for strengthening and preserving the rights, privileges and capacities of children, the vulnerable ones in particular as a prelude to improving their living standards and participation in millennium development agendas of developing countries.
SMWEF's project is meant to eradicate street living amongst children across the neighbourhood and alleviate poverty. Such an achievement would drastically boost the area’s economic standing and inspire much-needed development in an underserved community.
SMWEF volunteers and interns are placed on the ground to identify and rescue children in street situations or complicated family circumstances, and to assess their needs and aspirations. Many children have often dropped out of school to work in the streets, an unacceptable violation of basic children’s rights in Africa. SMWEF partners with local schools where it offers mentorship programs, skill trainings and a basic education curriculum (numeracy, literacy, etc.) to prepare rescued children to enroll back into the governmental school system.
