There are many more optometrists attending to many people suffering in this illness in Ghana. Contributing to optical care in Ghana especially in rural and semi-rural communities are often inadequate number of qualified practioners, lack of optical facilities, lack of awareness of eye and inadequate optical educational opportunities which has contributed to the reduction in social, economic and health related issues in the country.
This Optical Internship program is designed to help international students who have passion and interest in Optometry and Opthalmology with the desire to assist in improving the current situation in Ghana. We have partnership with both rural and semi-rural eye clinic in the country.
Volunteers and interns will be involved with healthcare aspect of Optometry. Integral to the internship will be communication and interaction with the community, promoting health, and disseminating health related information.
Specifically, volunteers and interns will work with both government and private Optical Centres in the country in the following areas:
Intern & Volunteer Task Involves:
Using specialists equipment for diagnosis and testing
Issuing prescriptions for spectacles or contact lenses
Fitting and checking prescribed lenses in order to correct vision defects
Laising with other medical practitioners and sometimes sharing the care of patients with chronic ophthalmic conditions.
Offering advice and help to patience choosing frames and lenses
Checking of signs and symptoms of general health conditions
Examining the eyes of patients of all ages to detect signs of injury, disease, abnormality etc.
In addition, interns and volunteers with education and/or experience in the field of optometry and ophthalmology may assist in the following administrative tasks including:
Managing staff, including dispensing opticians and clerical staff
Supervising and training junior staff
Managing the retail aspects of spectacles, contact lenses, and other vision care products.
Administering, organizing and planning the development of the practice
Liaising with sales representatives from vision care product supplies

Ghana is currently facing a shortage of both pharmacies and registered pharmacists, especially in rural and under-served regions. Pharmacy interns and volunteers are placed and/or work alongside experienced local pharmacists, dispensing medication to both in-residence and out patients.

Fundraising/Grant Writing
A lack of funding is a major challenge for many organizations in Africa who are providing support and empowering communities. SMWEF is seeking volunteers with experience in fundraising or writing grants to help us raise the needed fund to meet our project needs. The role involves researching and applying to grant opportunities on behalf of SMWEF Ghana. It will also involve approaching businesses and companies to encourage them to support SMWEF in line with their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Administrative Assistant:
SMWEF is looking for volunteers with basic administrative skills. We need volunteers who can use the internet, use Microsoft Word (MS Word), take meeting minutes; you can volunteer with SMWEF and to help as an administrative assistant in Ghana at our office.

St. Miracle Works Educational Foundation needs midwife interns and volunteers to assist our partnered hospitals and clinics in Ghana. These health facilities offer maternity services and diagnosis, treatment of malaria, typhoid, diarrhea, as well as provide contraceptive services, immunization for infants, ante-natal care, ultrasound scan services, and HIV/AIDS counseling and testing.
Volunteer will also be able to participate in health education focused on providing expectant and nursing teen mothers who visit these health centers. Main topics include family planning and reproductive health, dietary nutrition for babies, and prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV/AIDS. Weekly immunization services are provided at the health center, as well as some outreach into remote village areas.
Volunteer with medical training/expertise and knowledge in the medical, nursing, midwifery or public health fields (students, groups, families are welcome) can help by providing curative and preventive health services. This is a challenging medical placement due to lack of facilities. Volunteers need to bring their own medical scrubs, gloves, mask for personal use.

Volunteers will involve working directly with children and their families, fishermen, schools, department of social welfare to stop rampant child labor and trafficking practices in fishing communities in Ghana.
The goal of the Child Labor & Trafficking Project is to combat the endemic problem of child labor and trafficking in the fishing communities of Ghana through education, rehabilitation, and community empowerment. We provide educational sponsorship to current child labourers and children who have returned from being trafficked. We raise awareness on the dangers of child labour and trafficking and education sessions for parents, fisherman and community elders on the importance of a basic education for their children.
Volunteer & Intern tasks include:
Volunteers will conduct interviews with families, child labor & trafficking victims and the fishermen who hire them.
Volunteers/interns will help with the entering and analyzing the data, attending meetings with community leaders to discuss findings, negotiating solutions to rescue children.
